Invisalign Overview

invisalignYOUR SMILE IS NOW the center of attention.

Teeth do not always grow through the gum in the order intended. Often teeth will overlap or grow on top of each other as they erupt through the gum. This overlapping of teeth may be caused by too many teeth, periodontal gum disease or the teeth that are stuck in the jawbone.

Misaligned teeth often result in malocclusion or an incorrect bite — which can cause severe toothache and problems eating. Misaligned teeth also affect the appearance of a patients smile and cosmetic dentists will refer patients to an orthodontist for treatment.

Invisalign takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners created for you and only you. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth.

Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements your dentist or orthodontist plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten.

From mild cases of crooked teeth and protruding teeth, to much more difficult dental problems involving serious malocclusion, overbite, or under bite, Invisalign effectively corrects a wide variety of dental problems.

Gapped Teeth

Gaps between teeth can occur with uncharacteristic growth near the jawbone or if surrounding teeth shift due to the extra space — ultimately creating gaps in your teeth. Spacing issues and gaps between teeth can lead to gum problems, periodontal pockets and greater risk of periodontal disease.

An overbite occurs when the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth. This is caused by genetics, bad oral habits, or overdevelopment of the bone structure that is supporting the teeth. An overbite can lead to gum irritation, and significant wear on the lower teeth — further causing pain and joint problems.

An underbite transpires when the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth. It can be caused by undergrowth of the upper jaw, overgrowth of the lower jaw, or both. It can prevent the normal function of front teeth or molars, leading to unwarranted tooth wear and jaw and joint problems.

Open Bite

Open bite occurs when some teeth are unable to make physical contact with the opposing teeth for a correct bite. Typically due to a genetic abnormal jaw structure or excessive thumb-sucking, an open bite can cause poor chewing habits and slurred speech. It can also lead to issues like thermo-mandibular joint disorder (TMJ).

Overly Crowded

Teeth crowding occurs when there is no room within your jaw for all of your teeth to fit. When left untreated, this crowd of teeth can get worse over time, and result in crooked teeth. It can also transpire to plaque accumulation, tooth decay and an amplified risk of gum disease.
